Post-impact heating of a crater lake
نویسنده
چکیده
Lacustrine sediments from the 24 km diameter Boltysh impact structure record the rapid formation of an intra-crater lake. Stable isotope compositions and organic maturity parameters from the lake sediments deposited post-impact show that they were heated by underlying impactites. This heating is attributed to the establishment of an impactgenerated hydrothermal system. Estimates of the duration of heating are ~30 – 40 k.y. consistent with the suggestion that crater lakes extend the longevity of impact-generated hydrothermal systems.

Salt shell fallout during the ash eruption at the Nakadake crater, Aso volcano, Japan: evidence of an underground hydrothermal system surrounding the erupting vent
A hot and acid crater lake is located in the Nakadake crater, Aso volcano, Japan. The volume of water in the lake decreases with increasing activity, drying out prior to the magmatic eruptions. Salt-rich materials of various shapes were observed, falling from the volcanic plume during the active periods. In May 2011, salt flakes fell from the gas plume emitted from an intense fumarole when the ...
متن کاملExpectations for the Deep Impact collision from cometary nuclei modelling
Using the cometary nucleus model developed by Espinasse et al. (1991), we calculate the thermodynamical evolution of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 over a period of 360 years. Starting from an initially amorphous cometary nucleus which incorporates an icy mixture of H2O and CO, we show that, at the time of Deep Impact collision, the crater is expected to form at depths where ice is in its crystalline form. ...
متن کاملValley formation on martian volcanoes in the Hesperian: Evidence for melting of summit snowpack, caldera lake formation, drainage and erosion on Ceraunius Tholus
Ceraunius Tholus, a Hesperian-aged volcano in the Tharsis region, is characterized by small radial valleys on its flanks, and several larger valleys originating near its summit caldera. All of these large valleys drain from near the lowest present portion of the caldera rim and down the flanks of the volcano. The largest valley debauches into Rahe Crater (an oblique impact crater), forming a de...
متن کاملAbsence of Archean Basement in the Genesis of Lonar Crater, India
Introduction: The Lonar crater, India [1] is believed to have formed entirely on basaltic target rock (Deccan Trap, 65 Ma) and is therefore comparable to impact craters formed on other planetary surfaces with basaltic crusts. The genesis of Lonar crater has recently become complicated because isotopic studies on some impact-melt looking glasses found on the surface or in talus occurring mostly ...
متن کاملGenomic signatures of divergent selection and speciation patterns in a 'natural experiment', the young parallel radiations of Nicaraguan crater lake cichlid fishes.
Divergent selection is the main driving force in sympatric ecological speciation and may also play a strong role in divergence between allopatric populations. Characterizing the genome-wide impact of divergent selection often constitutes a first step in unravelling the genetic bases underlying adaptation and ecological speciation. The Midas cichlid fish (Amphilophus citrinellus) species complex...
